Burro Mitigation Project in the DMR

March 5, 2025 New Public Profile for Media Coverage

We have set up a new public profile for media coverage of the Burros. Please like/follow/share this page with your friends to help spread the word! One benefit of following the public page is that you can share the posts directly from it to your own pages (unlike the posts in these private groups that restrict sharing). Thanks for helping!

March 2, 2025 - First Goup of Burros Leave the DMR

Here’s who it has taken to get the first group of the 2025 Band of Burros from the DMR in Fort Davis, all the way to their new home in Granbury!  There has been a significant amount of planning on both ends, and to see it culminate into a successful project is amazing!  With such an outstanding job by all the folks in DMR, the burros were baited into their catch pens day after day to ease their comfort level. The gates were shut just two days before our arrival, and by the time T.E.X.A.S. Rescue arrived, we merely had to load them! (Yes, it is a bit more complicated than that).  From their planning meetings, to setting up and baiting catch pens, to selecting which of the captured would be moved to T.E.X.A.S. Rescue, this is definitely the A-Team!

Meet and Greet Set for Saturday March 1, 2025

Meet and Greet with T E X A S Rescue Inc , Texas Equine Xperience And Sanctuary is scheduled for 6pm on Saturday at the POA Community Center. Come join us for a slice of pizza and a Q&A session with these wonderful people to learn more about their organization and how they are helping our burros and our community. All DMR Property Owners and DMR Residents are welcome to attend.

Sunday morning at 7:30am, the burros will be loaded up for transport to Granbury, TX. You are welcome to come watch the exciting event, but we ask that those who do attend to please stay quiet, stay calm, and stay back to allow the work to get done.

Burro Mitigation Committee Update 2/27/25: We had a great committee meeting this morning. “Thank you!” to all the people who attended it and for jumping in to help! We have a full load of burros ready for Rescue: Two trailer-fulls! With 50 burros removed as our goal for 2025, we will be about halfway there on Sunday.

We are also moving forward with plans for a booth at the 4th of July event in Fort Davis. It will help with exposure to others about our burros and the efforts to help them. There is such a rich history in this area that includes the burros, and we hope to highlight that, and hopefully raise some more funds for the care of the burros. Stay tuned for more details as plans continue!

As always, please consider donating to The Band of Burros project! You can get one of the awesome t-shirts made just for our unique project with TEXAS Rescue! Donate at

Please come to our Burro Mitigation Committee Meeting this morning at 9am! We would love to answer your questions and concerns, and we want to share with y’all the great progress that is being made as we move forward with plans! T E X A S Rescue Inc , Texas Equine Xperience And Sanctuary arrives this weekend! Hoping to see you all there this morning!

Here is a picture of one of the gentle groups that hang out at my place, taken just this week after returning home from setting up the second catch pen at the community center location. There are 8 in the picture, though some are behind others. We love the donkeys and we love this community! We appreciate your support of our volunteer efforts to help find solutions for the betterment of all!

February 27, 2025 Update from Texas Rescue.org

The countdown continues to our weekend with the Band of Burros! Today we had power being turned on in our name, our new portable panels were set up as dividers and feed areas, and two rounds are ready for feeding!  We had an audience of the resident herd of cows, and they were genuinely mooooooved by the headway we have made! More to come everyday as we inch closer to the arrival of our new burros!

If you would like to volunteer at T.E.X.A.S. Rescue to help with projects, daily chores, or helping gentle animals, please contact us by phone for more details or visit our website for our Volunteer Application!

February 21, 2025

We will be having our next Burro Mitigation Committee Meeting on Thursday, February 27th at 9:00am. Everyone is welcome to come listen, learn, ask questions, give suggestions, and find opportunities to get involved!  Things are going very well in regards to Phase 1 of our efforts: to get the first group of burros successfully captured and picked up by TEXAS Rescue. We have a date set with them of March 1st for the loading of the two trailers that they will be bringing. They will have room to take up to 10 males and up to 10 females with young this trip. We are very excited and very grateful for their involvement in this large project to help our community and to help the burros! Good things are happening here!

January 14, 2025 Update

Calling all volunteers: We need your help on Saturday! Please join us at the DMPOA community center this Saturday, January 18th, at 10 am to help us set up the burro catch pens. We need muscle and boots on the ground, please! Bring gloves. Please let me know if we can count on you to help by commenting below or sending me a private message. Thanks so much for supporting our efforts! See you Saturday!

December 16, 2024 Update

Thanks to several generous loans and donations, we now have enough panels to set up at our first penning location. Plans are for us to come together after the Holidays to assemble and start baiting the pens at the Community Center property to capture the first group of burros for relocation to the Rescue. Once a date has been chosen, (most likely a Saturday morning in January), we will post it here so volunteers can come help us with the set up. We will need your help!

Castration, Birth Control, Range Assessment, etc, are all still in the works as well, but our current focus right now is getting these pens set up and getting a successful capture and transport of the first group of burros accomplished (hopefully next month!). We appreciate all of you who have come forward so far with monetary donations, equipment, locations, and man-power offers. Such a great community of neighbors we have! Please reach out if you have something to offer or if you have any questions. More updates to come!

November 9, 2024

We want to post an update on the progress our committee and our community is making with the Burros. Our most recent committee meeting was on 10/31/24 at 8am. We had several residents attend and sign up as volunteers. Thank you! We moved forward with discussing the current status and action items related to the rescue plan we are following from TEXAS Rescue. We reviewed all the many offers from volunteers, donations, equipment loans, and private land usage that have been pouring in from many residents and other locals. Thank y’all so much! We went over the approvals received from the DMPOA Board’s meeting in October, and discussed what else we needed to get approval from the Board for today at November’s meeting.

Today, the Board gave us approval to be able to accept donated/loaned equipment. They gave us approval to use the private lands being offered by landowners to us. We shared our set goal of 50 donkeys to be caught and removed from the DMR over this next year, which was also approved. We are so grateful for all the support!

We are moving forward on gathering resources related to castration plans, by talking to local vets, obtaining prices, and reaching out to vet schools for possibilities as well.

We heard from our resident volunteer regarding their plans to receive licensing and training for administering birth control to the jennies in the coming months, and discussed the safety and effectiveness of various possibities from several sources.

We are moving forward with pricing and purchasing of needed panels, assessing of the many offers of donated/loaned panels from several residents, as well as assessing the many offers of private land usage offers for setting up the pens in ideal locations.

We are moving forward with plans to remove 3 jacks, which are to be adopted by a local neighbor at their request. If anyone knows of other people willing to adopt one or more of the burros, please let us know!

We are moving forward with the plans to capture the next trailer-full of burros to be rehomed with TEXAS Rescue, once we obtain and assemble the first pens.

We are still gathering names of people willing to volunteer to help with the physical labor of the upcoming pen set-ups and for pen workers to feed, water, etc., so please let us know if you are available!

As always, we will continue to request monetary donations to T E X A S Rescue Inc , Texas Equine Xperience And Sanctuary directly on their site, or checks can be made out to the DMPOA with Band of Burros Mitigation on the Memo line. Every dollar helps with feed, fuel, equipment, and veterinary care costs, so please consider making a donation today!  When we have our next committee meeting scheduled, I will post the date and time on this page so interested parties may attend. Please understand that all of us on this committee have jobs, so the date and time of our meetings might not be consistent and may be subject to change with short notice.  Again, we appreciate all the wonderful help and support y’all have been offering! Thanks ever so much for assisting us in our efforts, and for caring for the welfare of these burros and native wildlife! Good Things Are Happening Here!!

October 20, 2024 Update

As a committee, we want to let y’all know that we are ever so grateful to our DMPOA Board for approving our requests for use of community property, as well as for agreeing to help with our fund collection efforts! Thank you so much!!  We are also extremely grateful for the many neighbors and others coming forward with monetary donations, donations of panels and equipment, offering the use of private panels and equipment, offering the use of their private lands, and offering their time and physical labor as we work with TEXAS Rescue on their plan for helping us manage the burro population! We can’t do this without y’all, so thank you so very much!!

Right now, we are gathering funds, resources, and equipment for the first phase of rescue…setting up catch pens. Soon, we will need man-power to assemble the pens, corral the burros, and care for them until the Rescue can arrive to take the first group away.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:  >Please consider donating funds to the rescue efforts! Funds will go towards equipment, hay, and transportation costs, as well as veterinary costs as needed. You can donate directly at https://www.texasrescue.org/  or, you can write a check to the DMPOA and put Burro Mitigation on the Memo line. Every amount helps…big or small!

>Please help us find more donors by sharing the good news about the rescue with your friends! Send them to the T E X A S Rescue Inc , Texas Equine Xperience And Sanctuary website, Facebook, and Instagram pages to enjoy seeing updates on the rescued burros and ways to donate.

>If you have panels or other equipment to donate or allow us to borrow, please let us know!

>If you have easily accessible private land that would be suitable for a catch pen to be set up on, please let us know if you are willing to let it be of use!

>If you are interested in being put on the list of volunteers for the upcoming physical labor needs of setting up/moving pens, or in signing up for shifts as a pen-worker to feed/water the penned burros when it is time, or for other future needs, please let us know!

You can private message us on Facebook, or call us directly with any questions or offers to help.

Thanks for caring about and supporting our mitigation efforts for the burros!

Sincerely,

The Band of Burros Mitigation Committee:  Jeff and Toi Fisher,  April Kersey and Heather Sagers
